For the very first time, the producers of Back to the Future The Musical have released a breathtaking image of its spectacular ‘flying DeLorean’ finale, which sees the time-travelling car soaring high above the audience.
It’s an exhilarating glimpse of what audiences can expect when the UK tour takes to the road later this year and Bob Gale, co-creator of the film trilogy and writer of the book for the stage adaption, promises, “The illusions involving the DeLorean are next level state of the art and I never get tired of seeing the car in action with an audience.
“This is truly the definition of stage magic. It’s one of those things you have to see for yourself. One of the highlights for me has been sitting in rehearsal with the cast when they see it from the auditorium for the first time. They absolutely know what they’re about to see and how it’s done, but their jaws still drop.”

Speaking about the creative team’s approach to translating the film’s iconic moments for the stage, he adds, “Director John Rando has a management style I subscribe to: hire the best people you can and get out of their way. These illusions are the product of an amazing confluence of talent: production design, special effects, video effects, lighting, sound and stage management.
“Every member of the team signed on because they’re all fans of the movie and were willing to give 200% to ensure that what they did would be worthy of being called Back to the Future. They succeeded beyond my expectations.”
With Australian rising star Axel Duffy taking on the role made famous by Michael J Fox on the big screen, his incarnation of Marty McFly will be joined by not one, but two Doc Browns for the first ever UK Tour of the smash hit musical.
Roger Bart who originated the role of Doc Brown and starred in the West End and Broadway productions will open the tour at the Bristol Hippodrome in October and then play the role at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

Producer Colin Ingram says, “We’re thrilled to welcome back stage and screen star Roger Bart to the DeLorean in Bristol and Edinburgh after creating the role of Doc Brown in the West End production and playing it in Sydney and on Broadway where he was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance.
“Roger has a gift of musical comedy acting that is up there with Nathan Lane and Martin Short. At the same time, we can’t wait to introduce Axel Duffy who wowed audiences playing Marty McFly in Sydney. Back to the Future is one of the most technically ambitious productions to ever tour the UK and Ireland, combining groundbreaking stagecraft, spectacular effects and beloved storytelling on a scale rarely seen on the road. Finding performers who cannot only meet those demands but also capture the spirit of these legendary characters is essential – the audiences are in for something special.”
Later in the tour Brian Conley will play the role of Doc Brown in Milton Keynes. Casting for the role elsewhere on the tour is yet to be announced.
Conley, who previously played the role on London’s West End, says, “There’s something incredibly special about taking this production on the road and sharing the magic, and I’m looking forward to bringing it to Milton Keynes Theatre – it’s always wonderful to perform there. Whether you’re seeing Back to the Future The Musical for the first time or returning for another ride, I promise you’re in for 1.21 gigawatts of fun. Great Scott! I can’t wait to fire up the DeLorean again.”
Back to the Future, the movie, was released in 1985 starring Fox as McFly and Christopher Lloyd as Dr Emmett Brown – and has since grossed £279 million at the box office. Now seen by more than five million people worldwide, Back to the Future The Musical is based on that film and boasts new music and lyrics by Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy Award-winner Glen Ballard, as well as popular anthems from the movie, including The Power of Love and Johnny B Goode.
