News | Dublin crime drama Love Hate favourite, King Nidge, joins Brendan Gleeson in West End cast of The Weir

Brendan Gleeson as Jack in The Weir

The full cast of Conor McPherson’s The Weir has been announced, revealing that star of RTE’s acclaimed Dublin crime drama, Love Hate, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor is to join the company as Finbar, in the production that will see Brendan Gleeson make his West End debut as Jack, at the Harold Pinter Theatre, later this year.

On a stormy night, four local men gather in an isolated pub in rural Ireland. Their usual banter and everyday lives are disrupted by the arrival of a woman called Valerie. The stories they weave to impress her are gripping, haunting and deeply unsettling. Little do they know that she has a profoundly personal story of her own, the sharing of which will leave them all shaken.

Joining the multi-award winning Gleeson whose film credits include, Banshees Of Inisherin, Harry Potter, Gangs of New York and Paddington 2, and Vaughan-Lawlor, who also appeared in BBC’s Peaky Blinders and will shortly be seen in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and RTE’s These Sacred Vows, will be Owen McDonnell, as Brendan, Seán McGinley, as Jim, and Kate Phillips, as Valerie.

Writer and director Conor McPherson says, “I couldn’t be happier to be working with this brilliant cast. It’s always exciting embarking on a new production but to revisit The Weir in the company of these particularly accomplished artists feels like a singular privilege and I look forward to sharing this story with audiences in Dublin and London very soon.”

Described as ‘a testament to the need for human connection, the possibility of hope, and the enduring power of storytelling’, The Weir is produced by Kate Horton Productions and Landmark Productions, and will be directed, for the first time, by McPherson himself. The piece will open in London on 12 September, running until 6 December – the West End transfer follows a run at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre from 8 August to 6 September.

With set and costume design by Rae Smith and lighting and sound designs by Mark Henderson and Kevin Gleeson respectively, the West End production will see 10,000 seats made available at £30 and under, including 3,000 for under-30s and blue light workers across Stalls, Dress Circle and Royal Circle.
